CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

The work in Civil Disobedience revolves around a particular series of letterpress printed Maps which are a critique on the United States in regards to different topics such as: Slavery and Racism, Indigenous Sovereignty, Social Justice / Oppression and Voting Rights. This section expresses how our country embodies tensions within the context of race in different specific regions.

Maps not only represent the stories of physical terrain, they are made with foldability and portability in mind. These features allow Kennedy to send large letterpress prints through the mail (sometimes without an envelope), and recipients can easily unfold and refold the work, unlike a poster mailed in a tube. In the "Sovereign" map piece, Amos intentionally flips the map upside down as an act of rebellion to what he says is “orientation we are taught of the world.”
